It is produced endogenously from L-arginine and oxygen by NO-synthases (NOS) or the more recently identified reductive (non-NOS) nitrate (NO 3 -) → nitrite (NO 2 -) → NO pathway. Nitric oxide (NO) has been identified as an important biological messenger involved in a number of physiological processes including blood flow regulation, mitochondrial respiration, and cardiac and skeletal muscle contractility.
